USD 417 April District Spotlight

USD 417 April District Spotlight
April is done and we are on the way to May and our last few weeks with our students in the 2025-26 school year. Many great accomplishments have happened over the course of this school year and more will come over the next few weeks. We appreciate all of our great staff that has helped in supporting our students in those successes. We also want to thank everyone who has supported our students and staff over the course of this year.
The Bond Process: Where We've Been and Where We're Going
One of my goals as superintendent is to make sure our community has a clear picture of what is happening in USD 417 — not just our successes, but the bigger conversations that shape the future of our schools and our communities. This month, I want to share the full story of our bond process and what comes next.
This Conversation Started Before I Arrived
The board of education has been thinking carefully about the future of USD 417's facilities for several years. In fact, when I interviewed for the superintendent position in spring of 2024, a question the board asked me was whether I would be willing to take on a major facilities project again, as I had just completed one in my previous district. That question told me a great deal about this board — they had already been doing the hard work of thinking about our buildings and knew that something needed to be done.
From the moment I arrived in July of 2024, facilities conversations were a standing part of every monthly board meeting. We reviewed a facilities assessment that had been completed in 2023. We studied best educational practices and the important role that building design plays in student success. We examined our current programming and discussed how to expand opportunities for students. We also took a close look at a challenge affecting our employees and our broader communities — the lack of accessible, quality childcare and explored how the district could be a meaningful partner in strengthening early childhood education for the benefit of families across Morris County.
These were not quick conversations. They built month by month with purpose and care.
How the Plan Came Together
Before the board ever set a bond amount, we held steering committee meetings and staff meetings to gather input from people closest to our schools. A community meeting was held to bring the broader public into the conversation. Once the board made their decision on the scope and cost of the bond, three additional community meetings were held. Information was shared through a dedicated bond website, social media channels, and coverage right here in the Republican. There were multiple opportunities for community members to learn and ask questions.
The Board Is Listening and Moving Forward
Following the bond vote in March, the board of education has been focused on next steps. They launched an online community survey, which 265 people completed. A paper version of that same survey is now being distributed to reach even more community voices. Once all responses are in, the results will be tallied and shared with the board, and then presented publicly at a community meeting.
From there, the board plans to host additional community meetings after the start of the school in August. These will be facilitated roundtable discussions, board members sitting down with community members to talk through the district's facility needs, what different projects would cost, and what various bond scenarios might look like. These are designed to be genuine conversations, not presentations.
Only after completing that process will the board determine what a future bond might look like. A November or March election is being considered, but that decision will not be made until after school resumes in August and will be fully informed by what the community shares.
An Invitation
The board of education and the USD 417 team remain committed to addressing our facility needs and providing students and staff with the best possible learning environment. If you have not yet completed the survey, I encourage you to do so. Watch for announcements about upcoming community meetings as your voice matters, and it will shape what comes next for our schools.
