USD 417 September District Spotlight:
Academic Innovation, Enhanced Safety, Facility Updates, and Student Success
As we move past the technical financial details and budget approvals of July and August, September has allowed us to turn our full attention back to what matters most: classroom instruction, student safety, maintaining our facilities, and celebrating the energy of our fall programs.
Academic Progress: Pioneering the "Through-Year" State Assessment Pilot
Rather than waiting until spring to measure student learning on a single, end-of-year state assessment, USD 417 is proud to be participating in the state’s new Through-Year Assessment Pilot program. This innovative approach breaks up state testing into smaller, bite-sized assessments administered throughout the school year across four quarters or twice per semester. The most transformative benefit is speed and insight: teachers will receive detailed assessment data and student performance results within approximately 72 hours. This timely feedback gives our educators direct visibility into specific question performance, allowing them to make immediate instructional adjustments and tailor support while students are still actively engaging with the content, rather than reflecting on it after the school year has ended. At the end of the year we will have a summative assessment score from the 4 quarterly assessments.
Safety & Security: Custom Emergency Preparedness with Emergent 3
Keeping our school doors secure and our classrooms safe remains our highest priority. This month, we executed our contract and began internal setup for the Emergent 3 (E3) Safety App—a custom, district-wide emergency communication system.Over the next several weeks, our leadership team is configuring the platform to coordinate seamless emergency response procedures across all district facilities. Once internal setup is complete, access will be extended directly to local first responders. By establishing direct line-of-sight communication between our school staff and emergency personnel, we ensure rapid, organized, and effective action should any situation arise.
Facility Updates & Ongoing Planning
Our operations team has continued to manage crucial capital maintenance projects across the district. Crews are actively progressing on essential roofing replacement work at Council Grove Junior/Senior High School, balancing schedules around weather conditions to keep our buildings protected and structural integrity intact. At our recent community roundtable meetings, discussions focused strictly on our overall district facility plan and evaluating options for a long-range bond proposal to address our aging infrastructure and mounting 20-year maintenance needs. Separately, during our regular September Board of Education meeting, our Board initiated preliminary conversations regarding long-term district efficiency and whether USD 417 can sustainably continue operating Prairie Heights Elementary School. While difficult and hard these discussions are necessary to continue to ensure that USD 417 remains in a strong position for students and staff.
Fall Activities: Celebrating Student Dedication and Community Pride
Finally, I want to extend a broad shout-out to all of our students, coaches, sponsors, and directors who make our extracurricular programs so dynamic. Mr. Fox also deserves a shoutout as he leads the charge in setting up and organizing and making sure our students and staff have the best experience and opportunities possible during a very busy time.Whether competing on the field or court, performing in fine arts, participating in academic clubs, or representing USD 417 in student organization events across the region, our kids have poured countless hours into preparing and representing Morris County with pride. Capping off September with our traditional Homecoming parade, pep rally, and festivities reminded us all of the deep community spirit that unites our district. We extend our sincere gratitude to every parent, staff member, and community patron who shows up to support, encourage, and applaud our students in all that they do.
As always, my door is open.
Sincerely,
Tyson Eslinger
